Fortify Your Skin Barrier

A gentle skincare routine plus the right supplements can support how you look and feel through winter and beyond. Small choices, repeated often, add up to a better baseline for everything else you want to do in 2026. Start small, stay consistent and support your barrier.

Why is it important to reduce inflammation?

Even if you don’t have a skin condition like eczema or rosacea that flares in the winter and makes life miserable, chronic systemic inflammation accelerates aging (‘inflammaging’) by driving oxidative damage to DNA and mitochondria, increasing cell death and impairing stem cell and tissue repair. The net result is faster loss of health reserve, barrier and immune system degradation, increasing frailty and the risk of bigger age-related diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and neurodegeneration.

SKIN BARRIER IMPACT

A compromised skin barrier leads to inflammation. Healthy skin is equivalent to a robust external defence: an intact brick-and-mortar structure preventing irritants, allergens and microbes from penetrating while keeping moisture locked in. Genetics can lead to deficiencies in key structural proteins like filaggrin and reduced levels of ceramides, resulting in a ‘leaky’ skin barrier. Allergens can then easily enter the body, trigger an immune response leading to inflammation, itching and further barrier damage from scratching — a vicious cycle.

GUT BARRIER IMPACT

Similarly, the gut (intestinal) barrier that separates your digestive system from the body, may also fail. ‘Leaky gut’ or increased intestinal permeability occurs when tight junctions between intestinal lining cells become ‘loose’ and allow undigested food particles, toxins and microbes to ‘leak’ from the gut into the bloodstream. The immune system then mounts a systemic inflammatory response against these foreign invaders.

Don't forget your gut microbiome

The gut houses trillions of microorganisms that also influence the immune system. Keeping the gut microbiome in its natural balanced state therefore holds immense potential for moderating immune and allergic responses. A diverse microbiome, rich in beneficial bacteria, produces short-chain fatty acids like butyrate, which are anti-inflammatory and promote immune tolerance; conversely, an imbalanced microbiome can lead to increased inflammation and worse allergic responses.

Essential help for your barriers

Amino Acid L-histadine

Fortifies skin barrier integrity and is a precursor to filaggrin, a structural protein that deters pathogen growth

Amino Acid L-glutamine

The primary fuel source for enterocyte cells, which help prevent "leaky gut" and the translocation of allergens or pathogens into the bloodstream

 hyaluronic acid

A natural substance in the body crucial for plump, flexible skin. Hydrates, reduces wrinkles, plumps skin and promotes faster wound healing.

PRebiotics & Probiotics

Support a healthy gut microbiome and helps moderate immune system. Dampens allergic reactions and inflammation

Gut and skin barrier health can directly impact general health and aging. Fortifying both the skin and the gut barriers with the right supplements is a powerful strategy for reducing inflammation — especially in winter, the season of dry, itchy skin.
